FDOT Selects SMS for Largest Known SHM Installation

Structural Monitoring Solutions (SMS) was selected by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) under a Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) contract, based on its strong technical approach and proven expertise in both design and construction.

As part of the project, SMS deployed two state-of-the-art fiber optic-based monitoring systems specifically designed to address the complex challenges of post-tension tendon deterioration. These advanced technologies provide early detection of structural issues, significantly enhancing safety and enabling proactive, data-driven maintenance.

Terry Tamutus, Project Manager for SMS, stated, “This is the largest structural health monitoring (SHM) installation known to us. It adds over 60,000 data points for acoustic emission, strain, and temperature monitoring.”
