SMS Selected to Monitor Deer Isle Bridge in Maine

Brunswick, ME – Structural Monitoring Solutions (SMS) has been awarded a contract by the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) to implement long-term structural health monitoring for the Deer Isle Bridge, an 85-year-old suspension bridge connecting Deer Isle to the mainland across Eggemoggin Reach. The Deer Isle Bridge is one of Maine’s most recognized engineering landmarks. Its helical wire suspension cables are rare among U.S. bridges, and MaineDOT is taking a proactive approach to monitoring their condition as the structure continues to age.SMS will deploy a system that integrates acoustic sensing and fiber optic strain monitoring, providing continuous data on cable performance, wire break events, and overall structural behavior. This real-time insight allows for early detection of potential issues and supports informed maintenance planning.

“It’s a privilege to support MaineDOT in protecting this historic bridge,” said Terry Tamutus of SMS. “Our technologies are designed to enhance safety, reduce long-term costs, and extend structural life.”

This project builds on SMS’s work with other major bridges in Florida, New York, and California.
